Setting up Acer Aspire One Netbook for a long overseas trip for a non techical user.

When choosing software I consider

• footprint running
• ease of use.

Removed Software,

• Microsoft Office
• McFee - limit free access
• Norton Online backup - limited free access
• Oberon Media software - just annoyed me.
• Abode Reader

Installed Software

• uTorrent - lightweight torrent for client. Takes advantage of free wireless connections
• OpenOffice - who needs microsoft
• Paint.NET - basic paint software
• VLC Media Player - fewer codex problems than Microsoft Media Player
• AVG Anti-Virus Software - latest free edition
• Picassa - Mac User Friendly
• iTunes - love it or hate it
• Google Chrome
• Foxit PDF Reader

Considering Microsoft Live Sky Drive from extra backup.

Still have not decided on a email client.

ACER Aspire One Netbook: Reinstalling Windows 7 Starter using USB

Almost 6 moths ago I bought a Acer Aspire One D255 Netbook.

I had the Android partition installed which I never used.

I was running Windows 7 Starter which was working fine until I decide to clean up and reinitialise so my niece can use it for her 6 months trip overseas.

Basically the stability of my software quickly slip out of control.

• Android no longer loaded.
• Setting up Services failed, and a pop up say "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation"
• Tried Safe-mode, pop up Windows could not complete installation in safe mode. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation"

Other crap I saw which was not helpful :

• in safe mode got to classpnp.sys. before failure
• tried using compmgmtlauncher only managed to create a worse loop going no where even to a pop up.

My solution

Using a Home Premium iso. Downloaded from

http://techpp.com/2009/11/11/download-windows-7-iso-official-direct-download-links/ 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium x86 ISO

Used a USB stick 4G, which I format from the command line

format /q /fs:fat32 e:

before using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool

2. Used the USB to install Windows 7 home premium on Netbook

3. I DON'T have a VALID PRODUCT KEY for Windows 7 home premium.

but Windows allows 30 days for activation. I only needed 30 minutes.

4 Started Netbook in Windows 7 Home Premium

5. Goto Control Panel --> All Control Panel Items --> Recovery--> Advanced Recovery Methods --> Return your computer to factory condition

6. Acer Windows 7 Starter Factory conditions were returned to my netbook, for which I have a valid product key.

YEAH

Days of pain, but I didn't have 3-4weeks to send of my mPost Optionsachine to the Acer National Repair Center.

Hope this help someone in a similar position.

Creating a Not For Profit Website

My niece and nephew are involved, in a local gymnastic club, which needs a website.

There is so many things I could do, but need a solution which is affordable, easy to update, and does not require me to make changes.

This is harder than I thought.

Niddrie Gymnastic Glub is great, but at AUD 500 a year, outside the budget.

'Outside the budget' perhaps I should look for sponsorship.

A friend mention jottit, from here I found weebly, collaborative wiki style, could be good.

New Macbook Pro

Got my new Macbook Pro. Yeah

I went with 15-inch: 2.2 GHz, I have extra displays available, the 2.2 and will upgrade the RAM soon.

I’ll be using this machine for:

• iPhone Development
• Java Development
• Rails Development
• General Office Use (Email, calendar)
• VM Windows 7
